This is the fourth time UFC featherweight MMA fighter, Charles Oliveira, missed the target weight for his fight.
Oliveira came in at 150.5 pounds on his weigh in for the fight against Myles Jury this coming Saturday at the UFC on FOX 17 event. Due to unexpected turn of events, Oliveira will have to forfeit a quarter of his fight money to his opponent, Jury. Myles, who came in at 146 pounds, is making his debut in the featherweight division.
Oliveira, who has a current record of 20-5 MMA and 8-5 UFC, is officially going up against his contender, Myles Jury. Jury, on the other hand, is holding a record of 15-1 MMA and 6-1 UFC. The fight between these two talented MMA fighters will be held in Orlando, Florida at the Amway Center.
In a recent interview with MMAjunkie, Oliveira revealed that he was confused on what was happening during the weigh in. The MMA contender stepped on the scale twice but two different numbers appeared on the event’s official weighing scale.
“I don’t know how to explain what happened with the weight. Things went wrong on the scale. But that’s in the past now. Now the focus is putting weight back on because tomorrow we go to war. I know that at the end of it all, I’ll have my hand raised. I don’t know what happened. I stepped on the scale, and saw one weight. I stepped on again, and saw another. I don’t know. Tomorrow I’ll be the winner,” Oliveira said.
Oliveira first entered the UFC back in January 2012 as a lightweight MMA fighter. He was able to drop his weight to 145 pounds and made a spectacular debut to the promotion by winning over Eric Wisely and ultimately getting the “Submission of the Night” award. After this victory, Oliveira was able to win over Jonathan Brookins by submission.
It wasn’t all butterflies and roses for Oliveira’s career though.
In September of the same year, he missed the target weight for his fight against Cub Swanson at UFC 152; he lost the bout and got knocked out in the first round of the match as well. Two years after that devastating loss and missed weight, Oliveira encountered another weight cut issue and came in at 150 pounds when he went against Nik Lentz. If this is not enough, Oliveira was pulled out from the fight because he became sick due to the weight cutting process.
When he came back a couple of months later to participate in the TUF 20 Finale, Oliveira missed the weight once again. This time, however, he won over Jeremy Stephens.
Oliveira is hoping to get back on his feet after a TKO loss against Holloway back in August. The MMA fighter claims that he had a neck injury prior to entering the cage. Everybody knows the record that Oliveira has when meeting the target weight for the fights so it didn’t come as a surprise when he missed another one, this time for his fight against Jury.
“I don’t know what happened. You guys saw what the display showed. Now I’m ready. I’m recovering. And tomorrow is a day of victory,” he said.
